What do Boris Yeltsin, Margaret Thatcher, Fidel Castro, Audrey Hepburn and George Clooney all have in common? They have all been interviewed by Barbara Walters. In fact, Ms. Walters has arguably interviewed more statesmen and stars than any other journalist in history. Over 900 people attended Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center’s Life Lessons, A Conversation with Barbara Walters on Thursday, June 12th at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Flemington. The program featured an on-stage interview between Elizabeth Christopherson, Executive Director of New Jersey Network and Barbara Walters. Ms. Walters touched on highlights from her new book Audition.
Barbara Walters’ talked candidly about her private life and professional career, reflecting on the choices she has made, the work she has done, the people she has met, the heartbreak she has faced, and the challenges she has coped with and overcome.
“Life Lessons” is part of Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center ’s Spring into Better Health Education Series. Attendees also enjoyed a health fair, which featured life lesson tips to live a healthier lifestyle, such as The Best Protection is Early Detection, getting a mammogram is an important step women can take to protect their health. Women in their 20’s and 30’s should have a clinical breast exam every three years and women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year. This event is sponsored by Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center, and Friends’ Health Connection.

The Best Protection Is Early Detection
Getting a mammogram is an important step women can take to protect their health.
Women:
- In their 20’s and 30’s should have a clinical breast exam every 3
years.

Life Lesson# 2
Numerous studies have shown that some families have a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Scientists are learning more about the hereditary factors or genes that influence a woman’s risk of these cancers.
The Family Risk Assessment Program at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center is a interdisciplinary cancer risk assessment and counseling program designed to help individuals understand hereditary and other factors that can influence their risk of cancer.

Life Lesson # 3
Hydration Hints
During Extreme Heat:
- Drink fluids throughout the day. Even when you don’t feel thirsty.
- Add foods and liquids to your diet that contain fluids – for example soups, broth, frozen fruit pops, flavored ices and gelatin.
- Limit your use of alcohol and caffeine, including colas and other caffeinated soft drinks, coffee, and tea (both hot and cold).
- Try to drink most of your liquids after and/or in between meals. This will help you consume more liquids and stay hydrated.

Include exercise into your daily routine!
Choose activities that are fun, not exhausting. Add variety. Develop a repertoire of several activities that you can enjoy. That way,

Who will make your medical decisions when you can’t?
An Advance Directive or Living Will is a written instruction that you make while you are mentally competent that states how you want your health care decisions to be made in the event that you are not able to make them for yourself.

Tips to Stay Safe in the Sun
Avoid exposure during 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest. Wear a wide brimmed hat, protective clothing and
plenty of sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater, applied 20 minutes before going into the sunlight and reapplied every 2 hours. Wear polarized sunglasses to offer protection to the eyes from reflected radiation.
