Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Cardiology

This diagnostic specialization uses radioisotopes (radioactive pharmaceuticals) to study all systems of the body. Our emphasis is on the physiology - or functioning - of organ systems.

Organ systems studied include the endocrine system (thyroid gland and parathyroid glands), respiratory system (lung scan), digestive system (liver and gall bladder (hepatobiliary) scan, GI bleeding scan), skeletal system (bone scan), and central nervous system (brain scan and cisternogram).

Nuclear Medicine is also used to evaluate sources of infection and to localize tumors in the body.

Hunterdon Medical Center’s staff is specialized in Nuclear Cardiology, which consists of a stress test of the heart and nuclear images to evaluate the flow of blood to the heart muscle, or myocardium.
